Hi friends, how have you been? There's a definite chill in the air here now, and we're already daydreaming of Christmas. The kids and I got a kick-start on some of their homemade / DIY holiday gift-making last weekend, by making these super cute {and super simple} wood slice Santa Ornaments. These are incredibly easy to make, and they turn out so flipping adorable!
I'm keeping a few to hang on our Christmas tree this year, and the kids plan on gifting the rest to friends and family.
Feeling crafty? Read on for the full supply list and my easy tutorial, to craft your own Wood Slice Santa ornaments with the kids this holiday season.
Wood Slice Santa Ornaments How-To
What you'll need:
- Scissors
- Red felt
- Cotton balls
- White yarn
- Craft glue or low-temp hot glue + glue sticks (note: if using low-temp hot glue an adult should complete the steps that require glue)
- Pre-drilled wood slices (we found ours at A.C. Moore for a little over $2 each)
- Kwik Stix Acrylic Paint Sticks (you can also use regular paint - however I prefer these quick dry paint sticks to help make our crafting fairly mess-free. The paint dries in under 90 seconds!)
How to:
- To make a beard for your Santa, cut a 5"-6" piece of white yarn. Tie a large knot at each end. Cut several pieces of 6" pieces of white yarn. Tie two 6" pieces at a time to your original string
- (that's tied off in knots at each end) using a simple slip knot (refer to images below.) Repeat this step until your entire beard is complete.
- Draw a eyes, a nose and rosy cheeks on your wood slice ornament to create a face for your Santa, using Kwik Stix acrylic paint sticks (or paint / a paint brush.)
- Using scissors and your red felt, cut a large 9" square.
- Affix just above the eyes, on your wood slice Santa ornament, using a generous dot / line of craft glue or low-temp hot glue.
- Wrap the ends of the square around the back side of your ornament and affix both ends of the felt to the back of your wood slice Santa ornament, using a large generous dot/line of craft glue/ hot glue. Allow adequate time for drying.
- Once felt has been affixed / glue has dried completely. Cut a 8" piece of white yarn, tie around your felt "hat" in a bow, about 1 1/2" from the top (note: make sure to pull your ornament hanger through the top of your Santa hat before tying it off at the top.)
- Use scissors to "fringe" the top of your Santa's hat
- Glue a few fluffed cotton balls into the top of your Santa's hat using a few generous dots of craft glue / low-temp hot glue.
- Glue a few fluffed cotton balls to the base / brim of your Santa's hat. Allow adequate time for the glue to dry.
- Glue your yarn "beard" onto your wood slice Santa ornament (just below the nose/cheeks) using a few small dots of craft glue / low-temp hot glue. Allow adequate time for the glue to dry. Taper your Santa's yarn beard with scissors (refer to imagery below).
