We made our Classic Irish Soda Bread, gluten-free however, you can easily use the substitution below, if you don't have a gluten allergy in your home.
Hi friends, how have you been? It seems like I've been spending a ton of time in the kitchen lately. Our twelve year old son is definitely growing, and he's eating everything in sight these days! Because we have a variety of allergies to cater to in our home, I try to make most of our food from scratch - including the majority of our breads/baked goods. This Classic Irish Soda Bread recipe is a current favorite in our home, so I've been making it at least two times a week lately; it's not just a St. Patrick's Day tradition around here!

Yields: 1 8"-10" loaf of Classic Irish Soda Bread - 6-8 slices/servings
Prep time: 10 minutes
Bake time: 45 minutes
What you'll need:
- Baking sheet
- Parchment paper
- 4 cups flour (we used gluten free all purpose cup4cup flour - you can use regular all purpose flour if you don't have a need/want to make your recipe gluten-free)
- 6 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup softened unsalted sweet cream butter (1 stick)
- 1/4 cup melted butter (1/2 stick)
- 1 1/4 cups buttermilk
- 1 large egg
How to:
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
- Grease baking sheet lightly with butter
- Combine the dry ingredients well (flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt)
- Add 1 cup buttermilk, 1/2 cup softened butter (cut into small pieces), and egg to dry ingredients. Mix until combined well.
- Lay a piece of parchment paper down on your work surface. Flour it lightly.
- Knead dough (for about 5 minutes)
- Shape dough into a round ball (press down on the ball once formed to ensure that it isn't too thick in the center). Place on greased baking sheet.
- Cut an X in the top of the loaf of bread.
- Combine 1/4 cup buttermilk and melted butter. Brush top of loaf with the mixture. Repeat every 15-20 minutes while baking.
- Bake for 45 (or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the loaf comes out clean).
- Cool for 15 minutes before slicing. Serve with a pad or two of butter along your favorite soups or stews, OR even as-is with a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate.
Enjoy!
