Dreamworks' award winning film has sprung to life in the new arena spectacular, How To Train Your Dragon LIVE; which made its North American debut at Mohegan Sun Arena on Wednesday. The touching storyline of How To Train Your Dragon (DreamWorks' award winning film that was adapted from the children's story written by Cressida Cowell) has been seamlessly transformed into a dazzling live performance. This new live show is fully equipped with impressive two-ton animatronic Dragons, talented actors (that double as acrobats in many cases), comedic breaks throughout and an incredibly touching plot.
As the show begins, Stoik and his son Hiccup come to an impasse. Stoik believes that Dragons are the enemy (as all Vikings do) while Hiccup isn't entirely convinced. When faced with a dragon that is in need of help (Toothless), Hiccup makes the life altering choice to befriend and help the Dragon rather than fight him; which ultimately changes everything. The two-ton Animatronic dragons are simply magnificent; each glides seemingly effortlessly around the set which is roughly the size of a football field [some even take flight via a large overhead track]. Each large Dragon is brought to life with 132 meters of hydraulic hose and their striking details are created using 200 liters of paint (each)! The back wall, which displays gorgeous scenery and graphics throughout the show, is comprised of 9 movie screens. Be prepared to be awestruck when Hiccup navigates the graphics of landscapes and bridges on these screens, all while suspended from a cable in the air.
Because of the way that the set is configured in this arena, there really isn't a bad seat to be found in the house! Though I will say it's pretty fun and intense to feel the heat from the bursts of the (real) fire effects throughout the show (in the lower level seats). Really, what's a Dragon show without a little fire-breathing action, right?

The How To Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular is inspired by the phenomenally successful, Academy Award® nominated DreamWorks Animation film, fully immerses audiences into the show in ways that have not been attempted before. Barely contained within the arena, the production utilizes the full venue, maximizing every dimension of performance space to transport audiences into a mythical world of fire-breathing dragons who soar overhead at great speeds. The state-of-the-art animatronic technology and large-scale cinematic projections interact seamlessly with the live actors to bring the story to life.
The show features 23 dragons, some with wingspans of up to 46 feet, Viking warriors and world-class circus artists and acrobats, to perform against a state-of-the-art, wall-to-floor immersive projection measuring more than 20,000 square feet.
